The national youth organization named “Juventud Rebelde” (Rebel Youth) has publicly denounced persecution against the organization on behalf of the Colombian Army on events that took place this past 25th of July in Tibú, municipality located in the Norte de Santander department.

A month before, on the 27th of May, young activists of Juventud Rebelde had drawn a wall painting outside the house of local campesino Tito Carerrero with his consent. Almost a month after, on the 25th of July, “10 staff members of the police station and 10 military members of the military base, belonging to brigade 30, went to the home of Mr. Carerrero asking for the identity of the people who had done the wall painting and threatening him with firearms” after which they proceeded to warn him that  “if by July 26 the wall painting outside his house had not been removed, they would arrest him for supporting the insurgency, indicating that this wall painting allusive to Juventud Rebelde Colombia, is part of the guerrillas”.

Juventud Rebelde has publicly condemned and rejected this political persecution.

On the path towards the construction of a stable and lasting peace, the Colombian armed forces and many State institutions need to open the doors to democracy and cease political persecution; the use of violence against political opponents has been a factor which has contributed to the cause and reproduction of this long lasting conflict.
