We welcome the successful completion of talks in Havana and the initialing of the peace agreement between the Colombian Government and FARC. The agreements reached are crucial for a peaceful settlement of the internal Colombian conflict, which has lasted for over 50 years. They represent the turning of a new page in the country’s life for the sake of national reconciliation and development.
We congratulate both parties and all Colombian people on a mutual victory. We note the political will to compromise shown by the participants in the talks, the importance of the intermediary services of Cuba and Norway as guarantor states and the assistance of Venezuela and Chile. A genuine contribution has been made to the cause of peace in Latin America, consolidation of regional stability and confirmation of the effectiveness of legal and political means of resolving even the most pressing and chronic problems.
We hope for the fastest possible completion of the preparatory period for the implementation of the provisions of the final agreement. On our part, we are prepared to continue to support Colombia both in a bilateral format and on multilateral venues, above all as a permanent member of the UN Security Council, in the international support for the settlement process and in carrying out urgent post-conflict reforms.
