He was found dead, with signs of violence, by members of the Judicial Police on Wednesday, January 21, 2015, in an unpopulated area close to Bogota.
The death of this leader comes at a moment when threats and political persecution against opposition leaders are multiplying. This is familiar to the State, as several leaders of alternative political organizations and movements are exiled, in prison or missing and murdered, in the worst case, as happened with more than 70 leaders of the Movement Marcha Patri?tica. The national government doesn?t provide sufficient, sensible or effective responses to clarify and punish these crimes and to end the harassment of the popular movement.
During the development of the peace talks, from the Conversation Table in Havana, the FARC-EP has raised its voice of protest because of the daily threats against human rights defenders and the connivance of the necrotic institutions with paramilitarism, which undoubtedly is part of the development of state terrorism.
The FARC-EP, in solidarity with the Peoples Congress and the popular movement in general, considers this new crime extremely serious and stresses its enormous negative impact on the search for peace. We condemn the warmongering of a regime that refuses to take prompt and effective measures to de-escalate the conflict, while it besieges with cruelty the unilateral ceasefire declared by our organization, thereby postponing the possibility of a period of peace for the humble masses who suffer the consequences of war.
We demand clear answers and solutions to the crimes against the Colombian popular movement.
